The Book Thing is a free and non-profit book organization, located at 3001 Vineyard Lane, Baltimore, MD 21218. Any person may visit and take as many books as they can carry away with them -- the only condition being that each book be stamped with a Book Thing stamp that prevents the book from being resold. There are usually many cardboard boxes and plastic bags provided to carry the books.

The Book Thing was originally located in the basement of a row house on 2645 North Charles Street. This older location was very small and it was difficult to maneuver around the enormous piles of books, especially since it was usually bustling with 'customers' and volunteers. The new location is very large and somehow the people who work there keep it stuffed with books. They even organize them in categories, such as 'Classics', 'Foreign Languages', 'Cooking', and 'Maps'.

It is very common to hear the organizers walking around yelling out phrases such as 'Be Greedy!' or 'If you touch it, you take it!'.

A decent visit will usually last about one hour, as it is akin to digging through a thrift store for the 'goodies'.
