Welcome to the new, permanent, cultural archive project site for Baltimore. Yes, it's like our very own little Wikipedia, and it even runs on the same MediaWiki open-source software. Here, you and everyone else can share your stories and discover together what a fascinating place Baltimore really is — written, produced, photographed & lived by real Baltimoreans! The best way to get started is to visit our Site_Map Page ...
And just go on from there! See also our Baltimore_Basilica & Peter_Zahorecz pages.
We would also like for you & your friends to Join The Baltimore Collective and help to make this project really come together in 2008 (aw, go ahead — it's free)!
| |
You can also join the Baltimore Collective Facebook page.
We know this all looks pretty complicated the first time you try it, but after getting started it becomes much easier and fun. You can correct or insert some facts on a page, leave a comment on a page's discussion tab or even fire up a brand new page. Anyone can hit a page's edit tab at anytime & start typing away! Please don't worry about making a mistake — you won't break anything.

You can stay informed about occasional events and other updates on our low-traffic e-list, The Baltimore Collective Monthly News on Googlegroups. This is another way to show your support for the project. There's a second e-list for more serious Baltipedians & curators. And at the top of every wiki article is its own discussion tab (see above). Everyone is invited to join in the collective dialog on all of our pages. Please encourage your friends and colleagues to visit and edit articles on BaltoCo.org — submit early, often & for many years to come.
If Sean is out there, we would like to credit you for the picture that you shot in the flood. We are also seeking pictures from all Baltimore photographers & historians to become a permanent part of the collective. Leave a message for Richard on his talk page.

Like what you're seeing here?
You can post a friendly message for everyone on our BaltoCo:Friends page.
And if not, you can post an unfriendly message on our BaltoCo:Complaints page.
Volunteering: What we most need are editor-curators ( Baltipedians ™ ) who can take on a category, like Category:Sacred_Buildings, Category:Performance_Art or Category:Books. Watch these pages and provide friendly, critical input as needed, coordinate with other curators, and help in your own way to evolve the project. In wiki-speak you are called gardeners. We would also like poems from local poets, photographs from local photographers & local historical collections, songs, tattoos, videos, etc — each piece on the author's own wiki page. We could also use a couple of good Javascriptors (you know who you are). But most of all we want for Baltimore folks of all sensibilities to share their visual & textual content & memories with one another on these pages. This is what you call community building on the Internet. There is somebody out there whose life will be changed by this ongoing work in progress.
